THE BEHEMOTH ARRIVES : GIANT SUNSPOT FACING EARTH

Published on 18 May 2016An enormous sunspot assigned AR2546 is turning-in on the Sun’s equator. It should take just over 2 days for this behemoth to be
Earth-facing. Sunspot’s (AR2546) diameter must be at least twice the Earth’s diameter.

GONG far-side shows 2 x further sunspots of similar size on the farside of the Sun. If they maintain their current size, they should be approximately facing Earth in 10 days.

Any of these large sunspots (particularly 2546??) may develop in
strength and produce significant X-ray flares. Also watch-out for any filaments/prominences which may develop over the coming days. Sunspot AR2546 is huge, but quiet at the moment.

NOAA forecasters say that a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) will hit Earth’s magnetic field on May 19th. CIRs are transition zones between fast- and slow-moving solar wind streams;
they contain strong magnetic fields that often spark geomagnetic storms.

But that’s not all. Following closely behind the CIR, a high-speed solar wind stream will arrive on May 20th.

It is flowing from a huge coronal hole on the surface of the sun.

A G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storming watch is in effect for the 20 May UTC-day. The storming is likely, due to another coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) rotating into a favorable position.

This will result in increased solar wind speeds and a disturbed interplanetary magnetic field. Initial effects are expected later on 19 May, resulting in active conditions; with an escalation to a few, isolated periods of minor storming (G1) on 20 May. Geomagnetic responses are expected to return to active levels on 21 May.
