Every week, homeowners across North America spray their lawns with chemicals, killing plants that their grandparents and great-grandparents would have picked and eaten.
In fact, most homeowners likely don’t even realize that those “pesky weeds” are actually edible – and far healthier for you than many items already in the refrigerator.
On this week’s edition of Off The Grid Radio we take a look at some of the most common plants you can forage and eat – whether in your yard or in the wilderness. Our guest is Mark “Merriweather” Vorderbruggen, a foraging expert and the author of the new book Foraging, part of the Idiot’s Guide series by DK.
Merriweather tells us:
ν Why it’s essential that every homeowner and off-gridder learn how to forage, even if food is readily available at the local store or in the garden.
ν How foraging played a critical role in feeding his family years ago, essentially keeping them from starving.
ν Why foraged plants are healthier than many common foods we eat every week.
ν Which wild plants you can eat that are growing in your yard right now.
Merriweather also tells us the easiest-to-find wild plants you can eat in the forest, and he closes by listing the biggest foraging mistakes people often make.
If you’re an off-gridder or simply have a love for nature and self-reliance, then this week’s show is for you!

I haven’t had the chance to listen to all of this but I want to add my safety tips… Please double check your book sources before eating ANYTHING. A slip could make you really sick or worse. It’s not scary, it is common sense. Know your poison plants well so you know what to avoid. I will list some other “don’t’s” for your safety.
Don’t trust the old “well if the animals can eat it, I should be able to’ myth. Animals can eat poison ivy and poison ivy berries…we can’t…EVER!
Don’t collect near animal waste (including farm waste). Don’t collect near roadways because of the chemicals and oil products. Same for railroad tracks and powerline right of ways…they often use herbicides and have too many other chemicals (RR). Don’t collect in or near standing water.
Once you are familiar with a handful of edibles you can have wonderful meals and you have the comfort of knowing you can find food literally everywhere. Plantain, lambs quarter, burdock, sassafras, purslane, wild carrot, dandelion, berries, fruit, nuts. Have fun!

Sorry but I just don’t want to live in a world where mere survival is the only goal – I WANT OUT OF HERE – OUT OF THAT WAY OF “LIFE”!!!!
TRUE survival – soul revival – never depended upon plants and/or animals to consume, digest and poop out, how phucking ludicrous, especially when we somehow need to pay for all of it, using a totally fake money/debt/slavery system?
Expend, expend yecchh – spend – yecchh – spend – yecchh spend…
