”THE UNKNOWN”

.
There are known knowns
There are things we know we know
We also know there are known unknowns
That is to say we know there are
Some things we do not know
But there are also unknown unknowns
The ones we don’t know we don’t know

SEVEN WORLD RIDDLES
By Emil du Bois-Reymond
.

.
Ignoramus et ignorabimus
“we do not know and will not know.”
.
1. The ultimate nature of matter and force

2. The origin of motion

3. The origin of life

4. The “apparently teleological arrangements of nature,” not an “absolutely transcendent riddle”

5. The origin of simple sensations, “a quite transcendent” question

6. The origin of intelligent thought and language, which might be known if the origin of sensations could be known

7. The question of freewill

THE BLACK SWAN
.

.
The black swan event is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight.

An ancient saying which presumed black swans did not exist, but the saying was rewritten after black swans were discovered in the wild.

A set of conclusions is potentially undone once any of its fundamental postulates is disproved.

In this case, the observation of a single black swan would be the undoing of the logic of any system of thought, as well as any reasoning that followed from that underlying logic.
