These incredible pictures capture a super-storm ‘the size of Wales’ battering the UK this early this morning.
The same storm saw 40,000 lightning strikes hit northern France in just two hours before it swept across the English Channel.
Thousands of families asleep in their beds were shaken awake between 1am and 3am by the dramatic thunder and lightning that rumbled on throughout the early hours.

Places in the south of the country were particularly affected by the super-storm.
There were some reports of homes being struck by lightning in Kent and reports that TV and phone signals were lost when the storm first hit shortly before 1am.

Many have taken to social media to post pictures and videos of the spectacular strikes.
The KentStormChasers group described the ‘insane strike rate’ of the lightning in France, where it’s reckoned 40,000 bolts battered the region in two hours early today.

The Essex Weather Centre said the storm headed across the Channel towards the south coast, before satellite maps show it suddenly swerving right and hitting Kent.

People have reported the storm hitting areas all across Kent, including Folkestone, Canterbury, Dover, Herne Bay, Maidstone, Ashford, Sittingbourne, Whitstable, the Isle of Sheppey and Faversham.

The Met Office has warned of torrential rain, gusty winds and even icy hail in what is expected to be a gloomy Bank Holiday Monday.

It officially brought an end to the glorious spell of hot, sunny weather which had beaches packed with holidaymakers.
