Here we take up the widespread ancient link between sacred cities and creation mythology. Historical evidence suggests that both themes arose as reflections of celestial events yet to be recognized. But what did the ancient myth-makers mean by the ideal “land” or “city,” celebrated as their own place of origin and inspiring an explosion of monumental construction in ancient times? Why did so many cities declare themselves to have been founded and ruled by the “creator” in the beginning? And what unique experience could explain the ancient identification of that founding “king” as the planet Saturn?
