Blackface ‘Nutters’ dance for Easter in bizarre British tradition
.
A group of black-faced clog dancers known as Britannia Coconut dancers or ‘Nutters’ returned for their famous annual Easter performance in Bacup, Lancashire, footage filmed on Saturday shows.
The Lancastrian group of dancers take their name from the wooden nuts they wear on their wrists, knees and waists which are made from the tops of bobbins, but it is their black-face that has caused controversy.
The Nutters’ face painted in black is said to resemble the dirt miners used to have after finishing work, but some people believe that it has more a racist connotation related to what might be the origin of the dances.
The start of this custom cannot be traced easily, but it is believed to have started with Moors who settled in Cornwall in the 17th century, who were miners there before moving to Lancashire to work in quarries.

So sweet, your British robin, dear Hattah! Ours in New England are so different than yours. Ours are taller and not as round, fluffy or cute. Although I think they are a lovely bird I wouldn’t describe them as being cute or almost cuddly, which yours definitely are, and quite friendly too! Ours are much more timid, they will bob along away from you if you approach them on the lawn, but they won’t fly away…just move a careful distance if you intrude where they are hanging out.
I love robins! That’s why I bought the beautiful artwork from you last year. Thank you so much for sending me both of your robin drawings and other extras, very pleasant surprises!
Robins are so special to me, always my most favorite first sign of spring has arrived! Winters are so very long and hard here, so seeing a robin really makes my heart leap for joy!!! I happily announce it every single year to my husband when I’ve seen my first robin…and he usually has seen one the same day or sometimes before me. Anyway….it’s truly a very welcome sight as a harbinger of Mother~Father Nature ushering in Spring!!!!
I love the video, have watched around 1/3, once for about 15 minutes the other day when you first shared and I left this window open on my home laptop just to remember to watch more of it when I had the time. Then tonight I had it going in the background for about 1/2 hour. I left it on while visiting for a few minutes with my hubby…so he could enjoy the Nature sounds too. He’s been busy with friends that came by for their weekly ping pong tonight. Meanwhile I was enjoying nature both outside in person and in virtual too, thanks to you.
When I walked Snoopy I was ooohing and aaahing over the pretty colors of the clouds at dusk. Nature is so very soothing and comforting. In the robin video comments many said the same thing, they relax to the sounds of the birds…and their cats take high interest in the video with them. LOL Some play it for their birds…so they can have a sing-along. One sweet lady had taken in an injured baby bird, it was calmed by hearing the robin video.
